  • the production of linguistic (meta)data through the use and/or development of automatic language processing methods and tools, based on standards in terms of data format and annotation schemes/codes;
  • distribution and storage, particularly on the Web, of linguistic (meta)data, including in the form of linguistic resources such as text corpora, dictionaries and lexicons;
  • analysis and automatic computational processing of linguistic (meta)data in order to extract information from empirical collections locally or from the Web, including through the modelling of linguistically represented knowledge by means of ontologies usually adopted in the Semantic Web for the formal representation of knowledge.

This job profile can be associated with the following roles: computational linguist; digital knowledge manager; digital publishing expert; digital library expert.
The specific functions of the expert in automatic processing of linguistic (meta)data include:

  • supervision of the entire life cycle of linguistic (meta)data, also in collaboration with software developers: production, analysis, distribution and storage;
  • the use and development of methods and tools for modelling linguistically mediated knowledge in large masses of data (Big Data in the Humanities), in order to create, identify and manage networks of relations between different types of digital objects, also and especially in the context of the Semantic Web;
  • the management of knowledge conveyed by the linguistic documentation produced by the information technology sectors of organisations, companies, bodies and institutions, in order to analyse the content of linguistic (meta-)data particularly at the semantic level to extract information from the documents and to model the inherent knowledge effectively.

Skills associated with the function

  • advanced skills in natural language data formalisation for computational processing purposes;
  • advanced skills in the design, development and use of automatic language processing methods and tools;
  • advanced skills in computational analysis of collections of linguistic (meta)data on digital media;
  • advanced skills in management (production, distribution, access, preservation) of language resources, both in the public and private sector;
  • advanced skills in the use, design and development of ontologies for the Semantic Web, in order to formally represent and extract the knowledge conveyed by the linguistic data distributed and/or owned by both public and private bodies, companies, organisations and institutions.

Professional outlets

  • Companies, societies, institutions, bodies and organisations directly or indirectly connected with the extraction and analysis of linguistically mediated information available on digital media and, in particular, distributed on the Web; companies and societies, operating in the field of digital publishing;
  • institutions, bodies and organisations active in the field of cultural heritage valorisation; companies, institutions, bodies and organisations needing information management systems; professional firms needing to manipulate collections of linguistic data in digital format, such as legal and notary firms, insurance firms and those working in the opinion polling sector.

This figure has the function of supervising processes that require the planning, production and/or analysis of content distributed and available via the Web, in particular related to the Humanities.
The main distinctive competences of this figure concern the ability to create and analyse data, both textual and multimedia, interconnected through ontologies already available, or extended as needed, for the Semantic Web.
These skills enable this figure to apply and develop methods, techniques and tools for extracting information from the Web and transforming it into structured knowledge.
This professional profile can be associated with the following roles: Web Project Manager; Web Content Expert; Web Distributed Content Analyst; Social Network Analyst; Open and Big Data Expert.
The specific functions of the Expert in content planning, production and analysis for the Web include:

  • the planning and coordination of projects aimed at creating content for the Web, through the resolution of both issues related to content distribution and various aspects related to digital communication;
  • the planning and realisation of Web environments, particularly those intended to host collections of linguistic (meta)data in the cultural area, also in the form of distributed content infrastructures on the Web;
  • the application and development of methods, techniques and tools to transform information provided in the form of linguistic data distributed on the Web into structured knowledge for semantic investigation purposes (Semantic Web).

Competencies associated with the function

  • advanced skills in planning and coordinating projects aimed at the production, distribution and analysis of content for the Web, with a focus on linguistic content in the humanities and cultural area in both the private and public sectors;
  • advanced skills in the design and evaluation of the degree of usability of Web-based tools and interfaces, with particular reference to linguistic aspects in human-computer interaction;
  • advanced skills in the valorisation of knowledge owned and/or used by companies, institutions, bodies and organisations through methods and tools for the formal representation and organisation of content in terms of standard ontologies in order to automatically extract structured knowledge from the Web;
