Degree Classes LM-39 (Linguistics)

The languages offered in this graduate programme are:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • French
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • German

To obtain the graduate programme degree, students must have acquired at least 120 ECTS, including those relating to the final examination. The time devoted to personal study or other individual training activities accounts for approximately two-thirds of the total time commitment. After passing the final examination, the student obtains the graduate programme degree in Linguistic Computing.

The degree programme is organised into two profiles:

  • Humanities
  • Business

The learning objectives are achieved by means of a mixed teaching structure (i.e., both face-to-face and remote teaching) that makes use of lectures, thematic seminars and guided and/or self-study computer and language exercises, as well as individual practical work. All teaching is conducted in English. Students are required to have a certified knowledge of English at CEFR level B2. In the event of a lack of certification, an Admission Test organised by the University Language Service, SELDA, is required. A placement test determines the candidates' level of knowledge of a second language of specialisation, in order to orient them to the courses corresponding to their language skills (basic level: Language and Phonology, or advanced: Communicative Strategies). The first-year subjects are aimed at acquiring the fundamentals of linguistic-computational analysis, focusing particularly on fundamental computer skills, digital language resources and automatic language processing methods. In addition, they provide the main transversal skills relating to organisational behaviour and aim to refine and specialise English language skills (written and spoken). In addition to deepening knowledge of the language of specialisation (which is combined with English), the second-year subjects provide advanced skills in the use of automatic language processing tools in various humanities fields, such as libraries, archives, museums, publishing houses and social media (Humanities profile), or in the field of the Semantic Web, for both customer and business process management-oriented applications (Business profile).

Linguistic Computing

The graduate degree programme in Linguistic Computing aims to train professionals capable of operating in the contemporary professional context, dictated by the continuous methodological evolution and technological innovation in the management and automatic analysis of linguistic data available on electronic media and, most importantly, distributed via the Web.

The Faculty may organise, in agreement with public and private companies/bodies, internships to contribute to the achievement of the 6 ECTS required for "Other learning activities". The activation of internships and apprenticeships is particularly suggested to students, also for the elaboration of their dissertation, in consideration of the considerable expendability in the corporate environment of the skills provided to them by the Degree programme.
